#WeAreOne – Week 7

Phased Opening of Astrea Academy Woodfields

There is no definitive phased re-opening for Y10 and Y12 but we are assured this will be clarified by the DfE soon. In preparation for a further announcement we have been working through Pre Opening Action Plans to ensure that when the time is right the health and wellbeing of all staff and children is at the forefront of all decision making.
The DfE has published their expectations of Secondary Schools to begin to provide ‘face to face support for Y10 and Y12 pupils to supplement remote learning’ at some point before the end of the academic year. This is not the same as re-opening to the full cohort or offering in-school provision to all. Any form of national re-opening will be dependent on scientific advice and, at a local level, on risk assessments of the health, safety and wellbeing of pupils and staff. The outlook for pupils in Year 7-9 is that September will be the earliest likely return date. The DfE has a guide for parents, which can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/closure-of-educational-settings-information-for-parents-and-carers/reopening-schools-and-other-educational-settings-from-1-june

May Half-Term update

As we begin the May half-term holidays there is no expectation for students to continue to complete work via Frog during this week. However, Frog is still available during May half-term should students wish to continue to complete work and continue structure within their day.

National Book Tokens – Win £5000 for our school and £100 for yourself!!

You could win £5,000/€5,000 of National Book Tokens for our school library, ready to spend when schools reopen – and if your entry is picked, you’ll also get £100/€120 of National Book Tokens to spend on yourself!

Whether you work in a school or have school-aged children yourself, you’ll know the importance of a good school library – and not just for learning. Studies show that reading for pleasure doesn’t just give children an advantage academically; it can improve their wellbeing, too.

Health and Well Being

As part of our mental health week we have been gaining the views of students on how they are feeling now and prior to returning to school.  This will be able to inform future work to support key pupils and their mental health. Students may have already completed this via Frog, if not please show them this link and complete the questionnaire via this link https://bit.ly/3gmze1l

In these challenging times it is important for us all to look after ourselves – and each other. Keeping safe, well and mentally healthy are vital and there will be times when we all need support. The links below offer support for positive mental health and safeguarding, which is of particular importance when accessing online learning.

If your child currently receives FSM vouchers you should have received a message via the App requesting your up to date email address, if you haven’t already responded to this message please do so ASAP or alternatively send your email address along with your child’s name to office@astreawoodfields.org.
Please also note, as outlined by the Government, AAW will be issuing FSM vouchers for Term Time days only, this means that FSM vouchers will not be issued for school holidays such as the recent Bank Holiday and the coming May half term. Any queries please contact us via the App.

Online Safety

As all the schools in the country are now closed to most students, children will inevitably be spending more and more time online. Whether that time is learning online via Frog Learn or socialising with friends via Instagram, Zoom or HouseParty, it is important, now more than ever, that we continue to educate children about how to keep themselves safe online. Please see the link below to the NSPCC website which contains some very clear and useful information about how to keep children safe online.

Stay Alert – Control the Virus – Save Lives

Please continue to follow the updated Government’s advice on how to protect you and others during the Coronavirus outbreak. Please check this out the latest Government guidance found here: https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus
