Phone Free School

What are the rules on phones?

Phones are a prohibited item in school, and as such, if we suspect that scholars are carrying them on their person or in their bag, we will conduct a search and will confiscate the phone.

We recognise that many families will want their child to have a phone to allow them to make contact on the journey to or from school, this should be a ‘brick phone’, and therefore we operate a collect and return service at the start and the end of the day respectively.

Why are we a phone free school?

The evidence shows us that mobile phones are damaging to a child’s development because smartphones:

  1. are highly addictive.
  1. are linked to mental health problems.
  1. expose children to harmful content including violence or pornography.
  1. reduce attention-spans, preventing them from concentrating.
  1. reduce the time children spend playing, exploring, interacting and developing vital social skills.

Children will not be thinking about Pythagoras when there is a phone in their pocket. The presence of a phone will stop children getting to university, or a real alternative, when we want to help them live a great life.

How does the collect and return service work?

  1. Scholars come to school on time and attend morning address
  2. At morning meeting, phones are collected by tutors
  3. Phones are stored in a secure location in school
  4. At the end of the day, phones are returned during Astrea Reads

Scholars that are late

  1. Arrive at reception and hand your phone
  2. At the end of the day, collect your phone from reception

Scholars leaving in the day

  1. If you know that you need to leave school for a doctors appointment, bring a note
  2. Hand your phone to reception before 8:20am
  3. Collect as you leave school from reception
